Colonial days, a man born on Union island could be of pure English blood but was described as a mulatto and considered inferior. Today, while the association is no longer the same, you still hear local unionites refer to as only one type of islander: blacks. The common language is English, although far from the King English. With a distinctive West Indian accent, many words are drawn from mixed heritage and Caribbean islands. The local patois differs from island to island and unless you are a frequent visitor or have an ear for language, it can be difficult to translate.
There is a genuine love given to children on Union Island. Elderly members of the family and community are also afforded the respect that has now all but disappeared from American culture. The honorable nature of the people is a large factor in the high number of visitors to the island. Their hospitality is hard to beat, friendship is held dear and a man's word is still a mark of honor. The most valuable vacation here is one in which you allow yourself to become part of Union Island community.
The companionship you take home in your pocket will far outweigh the photograph snapped, the treasured souvenirs or the rum consumed at a resort bar. From the lips of a resident living abroad "unionites are united in love".
